Attractive native hardwood occurring from mountains to sea, often inhabiting forest edges, shrublands, and stream banks throughout New Zealand

A thick gnarly trunk provides stability on exposed sites and may consist of multiple aerial roots similar to those of the pohutakawa

In suitably damp locations griselinia may begin life perched in the canopy of another tree or atop a fallen log where it sends down roots to absorb moisture and nutrients from the ground as the rata does

Developing a full rounded canopy of glossy green leaves on yellow stems its non-toxic foliage is freely eaten by possums, goats, deer, and stock. Although predators graze on this species it is generally a healthy, disease -free plant that withstands foraging. Drought resistant once established and not prone to dropping leaves in dry conditions

Dioeceious trees. Female flowers are cream developing into a dark purple fruit in autumn. Tui are the main disperser of it's seed

Four weeks cold moist stratification at five degrees celcius is adequate to break winter dormancy prior to sowing

Shade cloth protection from frost and direct sun required for first 12 months. Expect 30cm growth

Collected from pureora forest
