Pseudopanax arboreus is a native species found throughout New Zealand. From coastal cliffs to mountain ranges, stream sides to forest margins, and river valleys to epiphytes growing on tree ferns. Five finger is a foundational species in regenerating native forest
LANDSCAPE Small tropical-looking evergreen tree (5-8m) tolerant of most conditions. Moderately fast growth and dense foliage useful for creating privacy, screening from wind, controlling erosion, or as nurse tree in revegetation projects. Native birds feed from flowers in spring and fruit in autumn.
BEES Separate male and female trees. Male trees produce nectar and pollen, females produce nectar and fruit. Pollen and nectar provided very early in season when few other species are in flower (June-Aug) can be used to build up bee colonies in early spring. 200 trees per 10 hives minimum requirement
Seed germinates without pre-treatment if kept warm and moist. Cover with glass to replicate greenhouse conditions.
Seedlings can be pricked out any stage and transplant well. 450ml planter bag sufficient. Expect 30cm growth in first year
