Phormium tenax 'black rage'

Harakeke

Purpose Mass planting (cultivated variety)

Sun loving native flax with smokey grey, bronze, and copper arching leaves. Multiple flower spikes up to five metres high with red flowers rich in nectar for tui, hardening to erect black pods in summer.

Maintains neat habit and thrives in almost all NZ climates

Easily germinates from seed that is kept moist for 4-6 weeks. Seedlings germinate as standard green monocots before gradually turning dark after their first true leaves emerge. Prick out a handful of seedlings at a time to develop a full flax quickly. As with most flax propagated from seed, Seedlings may vary in colour and characteristics

Please note that this is a cultivated species of native flax intended for ornamental plantings. It has been selectively bred for its unique colour and does not naturally occur in native forest. The use of such cultivated plants should be avoided in native conservation projects where the goal is to restore the original native habitat to the area.
