A widely planted and popular native shrub with tough durable wood and long thin light green leaves. Heights of 4-6 metres common. Expect 2m x 1m growth after 3 years. Resistant to coast, drought, pollution and wind. Frost tender in first year.

HABITAT
From Coastal to sub-montane forests, grows naturally throughout North Island south to Greymouth/Banks peninsula. Occupying open areas with long dry periods once established provides shade and shelter as nurse tree. Prefers full sun 6-8hrs/day. Partial shade ok


USES
Dune stabilization, remediation of polluted lands and reforestation. Commonly used for hedging, privacy screening, high density planting for erosion control, and decorative shrub around home and garden


PROPAGATION
Germinates in good numbers without pretreatment. Soak seeds overnight in water and sow shallow on bed of seed mix. Cover with glass, keep warm, moist, and away from direct sunlight until seedlings emerge around 4 weeks

Transplants well. 450ml planter bags adequate for first 6-9 months. Protect from slugs, snails, and frost during first year. Expect 30-50cm growth with some lateral secondary growth
